Local Sports Stories

The Heritage Center building was once the Marion YMCA location.

Youngsters play table croquet in the lower level of the YMCA, which is now the Heritage Center office.

The Marion Heritage Center & Museum was first a church, but it was also once home to Marion’s first YMCA. The 150 Years of Sports in Marion exhibit highlights the 150th year of the YMCA in the Marion/Cedar Rapids area. The exhibit will also present some historical sports crazes – like shuffleboard, pedestrianism, bicycling, horseshoes, duck pin bowling and push ball. Plus, it will try to explain our enduring love for football, baseball, basketball, track and other high school athletics.

We’d also like to tell the sports stories of individuals in our community. Did you bowl or play softball with a league in the 1950s? Host an annual neighborhood croquet match in the 1960s? Have fond memories of participating on a high school or college team? Is there a tradition in your family of playing in Marion Youth Baseball? Or maybe have a tale about ice skating, fishing Indian Creek or riding Ragbrai. Then we want to hear your story.

Fill out the form at right, or contact the Marion Heritage Center & Museum at (319) 447-6376. You may upload a photo, or drop one off at the Heritage Center, which we will scan and return. Your story will be printed and displayed as part of the exhibit. (See sample below.)
